The Welsh Mountain Zoo – National Zoological Society of Wales is celebrating the landmark birthday of one of its residents!!
Nickel the chimpanzee, born at the Zoo in 1995, turned 21, and enjoyed a celebratory birthday party to mark the occasion.
Keepers at the Welsh Mountain Zoo crafted some extra special presents for Nickel and the 11 other chimps, wrapping some treats in party paper for them to unravel and enjoy.
Head Keeper, Michelle Pywell commented: “The chimpanzees are a really important part of the Zoo and it’s lovely to recognise a landmark birthday for Nickel!
“It was wonderful to see the Chimps all taking part in the celebration and sharing many presents.”
The Welsh Mountain Zoo is home to a large family of 11 Chimpanzees – five of which are males and six of which are females. All male chimps were bred at the Zoo as were 2 females, the additional 4 females came to the Zoo as part of the species breeding programme.
