A NEW FEMALE BACTRIAN CAMEL HAS ARRIVED

Our Zoo Keepers are hoping the stars will align for our new female Bactrian camel Elsa and our longstanding male resident, Ghengis.

Elsa has made the move to her new home here at the Welsh Mountain Zoo from Blackpool Zoo, and she has already been spotted getting "very friendly" with Ghengis.

Kim Wood, director of Living Collections at the Welsh Mountain Zoo, said:

“Elsa is a wonderful addition to our animal residents. She has settled in incredibly quickly and the move has been as smooth as we could have hoped for."

With less than 1,000 wild Bactrian camels, conservation of this species, native to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia and in the Gashun Gobi in China, is critical. They are recognised by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as critically endangered, with numbers decreasing due to threats from hunting and habitat loss.
