Macaw (Ara sp.)

There are around 20 species of Macaw, all of which are listed on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. Destruction of native habitats, and the growing pet trade are having a considerable impact on the survival of the Macaw in the wild; with five species already extinct in its natural environment.

When properly taken care of, some macaw species, such as Blue and Gold Macaws, can live for an average of 60 years, and many have been recorded to live up to 80 years!
