IUCN Listing: Near Threatened

The Margay is a small, tree-loving wild cat from South America and Mexico. With its beautiful spotted coat and amazing climbing skills, it can even move headfirst down trees like a squirrel! Its flexible ankles let it turn its feet 180 degrees for a strong grip.

Though protected, Margays are still Near Threatened due to habitat loss and poaching. These shy, nocturnal cats are hard to spot in the wild. They can live up to 14 years in nature and 20 years in zoos. With their native rainforest habitats under increasing threat from deforestation, understanding how species like the Margay live in the wild is vital to ensuring their continued survival!
