IUCN Listing: Near Threatened

Living in the forests and hills of the Himalayas, the Kalij Pheasant is a beautiful and shy bird. Males are especially eye-catching, with shiny dark feathers, white speckles on their backs, and bright red skin around their eyes. Females look simpler, but they’re just as important. Sadly, these birds are facing problems—mainly from hunting and losing their forest homes. They usually lay 6 to 9 eggs, so protecting every nest can make a big difference.
