Macaws are large, colourful parrots from South America’s rainforests and savannahs. All species are now considered threatened, mostly due to habitat loss and the illegal pet trade. They eat leaves, flowers and plants and live in flocks. Some species can live up to 50 years in the wild and even longer—up to 80 years—in care. They are active during the day and form strong social bonds.
