IUCN Listing: Vulnerable

The Asian Small Clawed Otter, the smallest member of the otter family. Known for its tiny yet dexterous claws, otters are expert hunters and hunt their prey with ease. Found in rivers and wetlands across India, the Philippines, and China, these otters are facing an uncertain future. Wild populations face pressures such as habitat loss, hunting and pollution; particularly from deforestation and pesticides that contaminate their waters.

Despite these threats, the Asian Small Clawed Otters live in social groups, called a “lodge” on land and a “raft” in water. They primarily feed on fish, mollusks, crabs and insects, and can live up to 12 years in the wild or 20 years in Zoos. With their unique skills and playful nature, it’s critical we work to protect their habitats and secure a future for these remarkable creatures.
