IUCN Listing: Least Concern
Meerkats, members of the Mongoose family, are social animals native to Southern Africa. These small creatures, typically 25 to 30 cm in length, are famous for their ability to stand on their hind legs, keeping watch over their surroundings. Living in large groups, or “mobs,” they dig deep burrows using their sharp claws, creating a safe home for their families.
Meerkats thrive in desert and grassland habitats, where they feed on insects, small reptiles, eggs, and plants. While they face few natural threats, they are vulnerable to the illegal pet trade. In the wild, they can live 5 to 15 years, with longer lifespans in zoos. Despite their playful nature, it’s important to protect their wild populations and ensure they remain a part of the diverse African landscape.
