IUCN Listing: Least Concern
The Red Squirrel, native to the woodlands of the UK and much of Europe, is a small and charismatic mammal easily recognised by its tufted ears and bushy tail. Once widespread across Britain, their numbers have declined sharply due to competition from the invasive grey squirrel, habitat loss, and disease.
Red Squirrels rely on conifer and mixed woodlands where they feed on seeds, nuts, berries, and fungi. They play an important role in forest ecosystems by helping with seed dispersal. In the wild, red squirrels typically live up to 6 years, though many face threats that reduce their lifespan.
Through conservation projects and breeding programmes, zoos and wildlife organisations are working to ensure that future generations will continue to see these enchanting creatures in our woodlands.
