IUCN Listing: Endangered

The Red Panda is a small, tree-dwelling animal about the size of a house cat, found in the forests of the Himalayas and parts of China. Agile and acrobatic, it uses its clever paws and strong limbs to climb high into the treetops, where it prefers to live alone. Sadly, with fewer than 2,500 individuals left in the wild, the Red Panda is listed as endangered. Mostly eating bamboo, this largely herbivorous animal also enjoys fruits, leaves, mushrooms and even acorns. Red Pandas are most active at night, especially around dusk and dawn, and can live up to 10 years in the wild or 14 years in zoos. Threats to their survival include habitat loss, hunting and illegal trade.
